It’s important to be driven. To be passionate. To establish short-term goals and to set stretch goals. Some people might say there is no secret to success, that it’s hard work and luck. I disagree. From my experience, the secret to success is to do what you love and avoid burn out like the plague! Burnout might look something like being booked beyond solid and skipping meals and exercise, or having email separation anxiety and forgetting what more than five hours of sleep feels like. Any of this sound familiar to you? Yes, success requires long hours and sacrifice, but you need to find a balance to maintain the energy that will take you to the finish line.
I have ambitious career and life goals for 2016. I want to buy a home, open my own salon, and teach more often at various hair shows and salons. But to fuel my ambition, I know I need to schedule time for myself beyond the studio. Let me be clear, I absolutely love my career! I never feel like I need to escape it or go on vacation to forget about my work. It’s exactly the opposite: I love transforming hair and educating people about hair. It doesn’t feel like a “job.” It’s a passion and a lifestyle. But I know that when I nourish my other interests—traveling, nature, and art—that I am learning and influencing my career, helping me balance my schedule to achieve my goals.
Don’t become so absorbed in your work that you risk losing your identity. Yes, it is important to work hard, but it is equally important to protect your personal time and relax before reaching that dangerous burn-out point. To enjoy every moment in life, take vacations (or staycations), engage in alternative hobbies, and pace your journey.
Figure out who you are and determine when to say enough is enough. The bottom line is that in order to live a meaningful life, you need to understand yourself; you need to be confident; and you need to know when it’s time to either move on, end and/or start a new endeavor.
You are in charge of your own happiness. And even though others may try to have control over you and your talent, your ability to love your life and be proud of your accomplishments is all that matters at the end of the day. Fall in love with your gifts and your clients will fall in love with them, too!
Work hard and take life seriously. But take it…One. Day. At. A. Time. When you are feeling overwhelmed, remember the following: PACE, KNOW, AND LOVE YOURSELF. Schedule time that allows you to stay in touch with who you are. Because the more you enjoy your life, the better chance you have at positively impacting others.
