Flux from 2015 New Creative Force Finalist Leslie Henshaw

Creating a collection is a process. It involves taking a vision, a concept, and advancing it through a thought phase into a finished product. Many artists mood board, sketch, and storyboard for weeks and months on end. But Leslie Henshaw, who normally takes a year to construct and execute a collection, she turned hers around in three weeks.

To make the Hair Expo entry deadline, Henshaw pulled out all the stops to bring her collection “Flux” to life and score a nod in 2015’s Hair Expo New Creative Force category. The biggest obstacle she faced was, of course, the time frame, but having a team and exceptional models made the journey a bit more tolerable, and fun! “I chose the models I did because I had worked with most of them before and I knew they could pull off the emotion that I wanted,” shared Henshaw. “I also chose a few because they were willing to have the extreme looks I wanted to feature.”

“I chose the models I did because I had worked with most of them before and I knew they could pull off the emotion that I wanted,” shared Henshaw. “I also chose a few because they were willing to have the extreme looks I wanted to feature.”

Extreme looks are precisely the case in point when it comes to summing up “Flux.” Born from a post-apocalyptic vibe and the current state of the world, Henshaw channeled her inner appreciation for influential feature films like Mad Max and Blade Runner. When asked to describe her collection, Henshaw stated the following:

“It’s strong, grungy and beautiful. I created looks that are heavily textured with lots of movement. It is a post-apocalyptic vibe featuring elements like shaved sides, dirty blondes, and brunettes with colour accents. Skin is clean, lips are soft and natural and eyes are heavily smudged. Clothing is strong, yet soft and feminine.”

What is striking about this collection is a lot of what is seen in her images is what is seen in trends and as wearable styles today. “Since the shoot, I have seen more and more of the grungy vibe worn day-to-day,” added Henshaw. “People are certainly wearing their hair with more movement and texture which is featured heavily in this collection.”
