Explore: Sephora’s Makeup Technique Classes

As a beauty minimalist, easily deterred from wearing anything other than Chapstick, I recently challenged myself to experiment with color when I discovered that Sephora‘s nationwide offer free technique classes. The particular class I attended was in Manhattan’s uber-trendy Meatpacking District and themed on the perfect lip and cheek pairing.

I have always loved makeup but avoided lipsticks, lip gloss or lip stains as I felt that they accentuated my already too small lips and mouth. This class opened up a whole new world of makeup possibilities for me. It was an intimate group of three students and two instructors with a single model. Always striving to be at the forefront of technology, the first step in this Sephora technique class was to use Pantone Color IQ technology to find the perfect color match for each attendees complexion.

Our teachers were wonderful, not only in their encouragement but also in pushing us to go outside of our comfort zones with makeup selections. I opted for a plum lip color from Dior with a sheer, shimmery blush. The goal was to have a bold lip with a natural cheek. The instructors would demonstrate, step by step, each technique. Then the attendees would do the same. I discovered that wearing lip color is so much more than simply swiping on a shade. We started with a lip scrub, a moisturizer and a primer. That was followed by both an invisible and color lip liner, and we ended with the actual lip color. Everything was then topped with a gloss. The result was amazing! I instantly felt more confident and ready to take on the day. It didn’t hurt that everyone decided my lips made me look just like Dita Von Teese!

The lip techniques were so detailed and precise that they completely overshadowed the simplicity required for the cheeks. Nevertheless, we were shown four different ways to apply blush, a skill I will definitely utilize in the future.

It was extremely difficult suppressing the urge to buy one of everything used in the class (genius marketing plan, Sephora!). I left feeling great and with a new wishlist of makeup must-haves. I can’t wait to take another—“Brows with Eye Contour” is next on my list!
