Who: Peregrine Church

What: Founder of Rainworks!

Where: Seattle, WA

Our site/publication is called Industrie and we spelled it with an “ie” on purpose—it’s the French way of spelling Industry and was once defined to us as an artisan who works with their hands to create things of beauty and substance. So tell us, how do you define beauty and substance?

Beauty is something that is aesthetically pleasing in such a way that it gives you a warm feeling. Substance is…daunting, but in a really important way.

What other creative outlets besides Street Art do you explore/practice?

Magic/Music/Engineering/Graphic Design.

What’s your personal motto/favorite quote?

“Be the weird thing in someone’s day, that breaks the monotony that makes souls decay.” ~ A friend.

Either that or, “Worry is a misuse of the imagination.”  That was also a friend.

When have you felt the most vulnerable in your career?

Every time I put something out that I’ve put a lot into. Like that Reddit post [Church posted Rainworks! to Reddit and then it went viral] I was nervous. I didn’t want it to negatively affect me. People think what they think and I think whatever I think.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

When you’re trying to make a decision between two big things, pick one and don’t look back.

BONUS QUESTION:

What’s one thing that cheers you up when you are having a bad day?

I’ll just do something…silly. Like I’ll go downtown and there’s this really busy corner, right. It has like, all of the buskers and panhandlers and people walking all through the square. I’ll bring these little 3×4 cards with me that just say “Free Coupon” on them and just, you know, start handing them out. Some people laugh and some people ask me what it’s good for and I’ll just say, “It’s good for one free confused expression.” Those people don’t really get it. But that’s cool. Stuff like that really just brings me back when I’m having a bad day. I love bringing a little silliness into the world, whenever I possibly can.
