5Qs with Illustrator Stina Persson

From watercolors to acrylic and ink, she’s on our “must meet in person” list. That’s for damn certain. She “caught our eye” the very moment we saw the beautiful illustrations she created for Redken.

Who: Stina Persson

What: Illustrator

Where: Stockholm, Sweden

Our site/publication is called Industrie and we spelled it with an “ie” on purpose – it’s the French way of spelling Industry and was once defined to us as an artisan who works with their hands to create things of beauty and substance. So tell us, how do you define beauty and substance?

Integrity and personality get more and more important these days when we, with the help of Photoshop and plastic surgery, could all look alike and thanks to the Internet, all could live in identical hotel-like homes, watch the same TV series and listen to the same music. I think personal style, intelligence and the handmade artisanal art will always be more attractive and interesting than the perfect.

What other creative outlets do you explore/practice?

I love creating collages with failed artworks to see if I can make them work. The feeling of having nothing to lose is liberating. I love dinner parties and the cooking, company and happy mess that come with it. Lately we have been doing a lot of gardening in our country house, but as it is in the middle of a forest without a fence, it seems we are just feeding the deer and the elk.?

What’s your personal motto/favorite quote?

“Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans.” – John Lennon

When have you felt the most vulnerable in your career?

The early years when I didn’t really have a lot of experience.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

“Don’t let the sun go down on your anger.”

My father said that whenever my four siblings and I argued at bedtime. Now I say the same to my kids. I think that has given me many hours of better sleep.

BONUS QUESTION:

What’s your favorite part of every day?

When I have my first cup of coffee at the coffee shop across the street. Or the everyday family dinners when we all sit down together and talk and eat.
