We met L.A. Mike while on location in Griffith, Indiana, shooting photo and video how-tos at our good friend Ben Mollin‘s namesake salon and we quickly fell in love with him. L.A. Mike is a tattooed, bearded, mountain of a man, with a heart of gold and a unique perspective on life and beauty.
Who: L.A. Mike
What: Stylist/Barber at Ben Mollin Hair Education
Where: Griffith, Indiana
Our site/publication is called Industrie and we spelled it with an “ie” on purpose – it’s the French way of spelling Industry and was once defined to us as an artisan who works with their hands to create things of beauty and substance. So tell us, how do you define beauty and substance?
That’s a pretty difficult questions. Beauty and substance is going to lie in the eye of the beholder, so my beauty and substance is going to be different from your beauty and substance. However, they might have some common ground. That is creativity.
What other creative outlets do you explore/practice?
Music. [Industrie: Playing?] No, listening to. People, Nature.
What’s your personal motto/favorite quote?
“If it ain’t broke leave it alone!” No, my favorite one is from, hang on…Mark Twain. [Here, we pause to confirm that via Google] “The two most important days of your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” [Angie Mollin, Ben’s wife, interrupts: “Did you ever find out why? Mike laughs, “Still workin’ on that!”]
When have you felt the most vulnerable in your career?
My first haircut. After that, I knew it didn’t matter because…..it wasn’t my hair!
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
To always seize the day and make the most of it, ‘cause tomorrow is never guaranteed. Because, as you get older, you realize that life is a lot like a roll of toilet paper. Not just full of shit, but as you get older, the roll just goes by faster.
If you were a superhero, what would your special power be?
I’d want to fly, because that’s what I get when I’m on my bike and it’s the most euphoric feeling. When I don’t have a bike, I get anxiety.
Who/What inspires you to be the best you, every day?
My mom. My mom taught me how to respect the things that you have in front of you and to always feed God’s creatures. Because, if you do that, He’ll make sure that you never go without.
