When it comes to pushing creative boundaries, Richard Ashforth is the epitome of going against the grain. He’s not interested in cutting and pasting the latest trends on his clients or recreating “the latest” in his work. He plays by his own rules and is fervent in getting the next generation of stylists and creatives to step out of their comfort zone and be pushed on a higher, creative level. He’s doing just that by educating stylists around the globe through SACO and through his latest (and exceptionally brilliant) live performance, NOISE.

Our site/publication is called Industrie and we spelled it with an “ie” on purpose—it’s the French way of spelling Industry and was once defined to us as an artisan who works with their hands to create things of beauty and substance. So tell us, how do you define beauty and substance?
Beauty is all about suitability and the individual, and substance is putting a smile on people’s faces.
What other creative outlets do you explore/practice?
I play music, I love playing the guitar.
What’s your personal motto/favorite quote?
Beauty first – it’s the SACO motto.
When have you felt the most vulnerable in your career?
Starting the business 10 years ago. Going out on your own is a big leap!
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Trust your own instincts – if I ever go against this advice I definitely regret it!
What 3 things would you never leave the house without?
Phone, keys and shoes.
If you’re having a bad day, what’s the one thing that will always cheer you up?
What’s one thing most people would never know about you just from looking at you?
I have three nipples.

What’s your favorite part of every day?
Dawn, before everybody wakes up and everything is still.
Are you a side, back or stomach sleeper?
I sleep on my left side.
If I asked you how many ping-pong balls it takes to fill an airplane, what would you say?
Depends on the size of the plane!
